Bringing your Budgie Home

It is important when bringing your budgie home that it feels safe. Your budgie will be very frightened and scared as it has just moved home away from other budgies that the pet shop or breeder may have had.

Key Tips

  • Cover the cage roof and all 3 sides apart from the front of the cage during the day for the first few days. Budgies feel safer in an enclosed area so there is less chance of attack from predators.
  • Keep looking in on the budgie and talk to it gently and let it get used to your voice and yourself, it will eventually realise you are not the enemy as you keep walking past, to and from the cage without hurting it.
  • Put your hand in the cage regularly but do not approach the budgie, only put your hand in to change water or add seed or do general cleaning. You can begin to approach the budgie later on, refer to the Taming Section.
  • At night, cover the cage on all 4 sides and roof and leave a small gap for air to get in. Maybe also consider leaving a dim light on in the room the budgie is in, as it may get frightened during the night and fall off its perch and it will need to find its way back.
